Siniristi-jihadismi? Maskulinistinen nationalismi koulujen itsenäisyysjuhlissa

This short text comments on symbols of Finnish independence. Using insights of feminist scholarship, I analyze masculinist nationalism in what I call “Jihadism of the Blue Cross”. The reference is to the cross in the Finnish flag and I also analyze a patriotic song that evokes violent memories.

Even if with the “jihadism” reference I play with an analogy between masculinist nationalism south of the Mediterranean and Finland, I emphasize that there are also peaceful interepretations of the term. Continue reading

In this text, Cyrillic Glimpses of the Future, I present my proposal to have cyrillic alphabet as part of the curriculum of Finnish schools. I have made this proposal a couple of times before, for example during my World Political City Walk in August 2012.

The text appeared in Idäntutkimus 2/2012. It also includes reflections on what Russian capitalism might teach us about the future of global capitalism.
