This is my modest proposal for a procedural change in the public defense of doctoral dissertations. The opponent should make her or his final statement only after possible questions and comments from the audience have been heard and answered by the candidate.

In theory, in Finland the event is a public one. A doctoral defense can have a relatively sizable audience, often dozens and occasionally a couple of hundred of people. In the current form, the opponent gives the final verdict before the wider scientific community or anyone else present has been able to comment. This counterintuitive practice downplays the public nature of the event. It is time to change it.

The proposal was published in Yliopisto (12/2012, p. 69), the magazine of the University of Helsinki. It was followed by the rector’s response. Thomas Wilhelmsson emphasized the public nature of the defense and welcomed initiatives to activate the public discussion during the event.

Perhaps others will come up with better proposals or show the weaknesses of mine. Like democracy, science demands a constant attention to its public and common nature. This also raises the question of the distinction between the public and the common. Is it a relevant distinction here?

Kannustakaa väitösten yleisöä

Ehdotan muutosta väitöstilaisuuksien ohjeistukseen. Vastaväittäjän tulisi antaa tilaisuudessa loppuarvionsa vasta kuultuaan yleisön joukosta mahdollisesti tulleet kommentit ja väittelijän vastaukset niihin.

Muutos jäntevöittäisi väitöstilaisuuksien etenemisen johdonmukaisuutta ja draamallista kaarta. Se voisi motivoida tiedeyhteisöä ja muitakin ottamaan väitöskirjojen tarkastusprosessin julkisen ulottuvuuden aiempaa vakavammin. Näin se myös parantaisi väitöskirjojen tieteellistä arviointia.

Olen väitöstilaisuuksien puheenjohtajana (eli kustoksena) toimiessani pyrkinyt kannustamaan yhteisöä aktiiviseen osallistumiseen väitöstilaisuuden lopussa. Kannustavuutta varmastikin lisäisi, jos kommenteilla voi olla aitoa vaikutusta vastaväittäjän loppupuheenvuoroon.

”Ylimääräiset vastaväittäjät” eivät saisi olla merkityksetöntä ylijäämää. Tiede tarvitsee aktiivista tiedeyhteisöä.
